Wind Mitigation

A wind mitigation inspection is a thorough examination of a property to determine its ability to withstand strong winds. This inspection is particularly important in areas prone to hurricanes or high winds.

The inspection covers several key areas:

Roof Covering: The inspector will check the type, age, and condition of the roof covering materials. They will also verify if the materials meet the building codes.

Roof Deck Attachment: This involves checking how the roof deck is attached to the trusses. The inspector will look for the type and size of nails, as well as the spacing between them.

Roof-to-Wall Connection: The inspector will check how the roof is attached to the walls. This includes looking at the type of connection, such as toenails, clips, or single or double wraps.

Roof Shape: Certain roof shapes, like hip roofs, are more wind-resistant than others.

Secondary Water Resistance: This layer of protection prevents the roof from leaking if the roof covering is blown off in a windstorm.

Opening Protection: The inspector will check if the windows, doors, and skylights are protected with impact-resistant coverings or shutters.

The results of a wind mitigation inspection can help homeowners qualify for insurance discounts, as homes with good wind mitigation features are less likely to suffer severe damage during a windstorm.
